One important milestone came in 1949, when Alcan Aluminium of South Africa commissioned an aluminium processing plant in Pietermaritzburg. The plant initially had a capacity of approximately 7,000 tonnes per year and expanded substantially over the following decades. South African aluminium consumption grew strongly between the 1950s and 1970s, reaching approximately 52,500 tonnes in 1978.


This growth was significant because it demonstrated that aluminium was becoming more than an imported speciality material. A larger domestic market supported the development of local manufacturing, fabrication and downstream industries.


For construction, this mattered enormously.


The more readily aluminium could be processed, formed and supplied within the country, the more practical it became for manufacturers and architects to incorporate it into buildings.


The Development of Aluminium for Architecture

Aluminium possesses several characteristics that make it particularly useful in architecture. It is relatively lightweight, corrosion resistant and capable of being formed into precise sections through extrusion.

Extrusion was especially important to the development of architectural aluminium.


Instead of manufacturing every frame as an entirely individual component, manufacturers could produce standardised aluminium profiles with consistent dimensions and characteristics. These profiles could then be fabricated into different window, door and glazing configurations.


This helped transform aluminium from a material into a building system.


Windows could be manufactured using repeatable profiles. Doors could be produced using compatible sections and hardware. Larger commercial glazing systems could be designed around established profiles and performance requirements.


Standardisation therefore did not mean that every building had to look the same. Rather, it provided manufacturers, architects and contractors with a common technical foundation from which different designs could be developed.

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) was established in 1945 as the country's national standardisation body. SABS describes standardisation as a way of establishing common and agreed requirements that improve safety, reliability, performance and consistency.


For the construction industry, standardisation became increasingly important as buildings became more complex and construction moved towards more systematic manufacturing.


By the second half of the 20th century, aluminium windows and doors were no longer simply fabricated according to individual craftsmanship. The industry increasingly relied upon defined materials, profiles, performance criteria, glazing requirements and installation practices.

This was an important development because it reflected the growing maturity of aluminium as an architectural and construction material.


The industry was no longer simply concerned with producing aluminium. It increasingly needed to address questions of manufacturing quality, installation, performance, technical knowledge and professional practice.


The Aluminium Federation of South Africa (AFSA) followed in 1981 and became an important industry organisation promoting the awareness and use of aluminium throughout Southern Africa. AFSA represents a broad range of sectors, including primary and secondary aluminium production, semi-fabrication, extrusion, architectural and building applications, fabrication and surface finishing.


Together, these developments illustrate how aluminium moved from being simply a raw material to becoming part of a structured South African industrial and architectural ecosystem.


Richards Bay and the Expansion of South African Aluminium

Another major milestone occurred in Richards Bay.


The Bayside aluminium smelter began production in May 1971, while the construction of the Hillside smelter began in 1993 and was completed in 1995. The location was strategically important because Richards Bay offered access to a major harbour, suitable land and the high-voltage electricity required for aluminium production.


The development of the Richards Bay aluminium industry strengthened South Africa's position in the aluminium value chain and supported the broader development of downstream manufacturing.


For architectural aluminium, this broader industrial base helped create an environment in which aluminium could increasingly be manufactured, fabricated and incorporated into South African buildings.


From Standard Profiles to Modern Aluminium Windows and Doors

The modern aluminium window or door may look relatively simple, but it represents decades of industrial development.


A contemporary aluminium window depends on a combination of:

Although aluminium is an international material, its application is influenced by local conditions.


South Africa covers a remarkably diverse range of climates, from coastal environments to the dry interior and the highveld regions around Johannesburg, Pretoria and Centurion.


An aluminium system suitable for one building cannot automatically be assumed to be appropriate for every application.

The National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act 103 of 1977 established a national framework, with the regulations becoming effective in law in 1985. The first SABS code of practice explaining how the regulations could be applied was published as SABS 0400-1987, followed by a revised 1990 edition.


The framework subsequently evolved into the SANS 10400 family of standards.


For aluminium windows and doors, this broader regulatory environment is particularly relevant because modern fenestration involves structural performance, glazing safety, ventilation, weather resistance and energy considerations.


For example, SANS 10400-N addresses glazing, while SANS 613 is referenced for mechanical performance criteria for fenestration products.


The result is a construction industry in which an aluminium window is no longer judged simply by its appearance. Its performance and installation must also be considered within the requirements applicable to the building.

The development of aluminium in South Africa during the 20th century explains why the material is now so familiar in modern construction.


What began as an industrial material developed through local processing, manufacturing, extrusion, architectural fabrication, industry organisation and technical standardisation.


Today, aluminium windows and doors can be found throughout South African architecture, from residential homes and apartment developments to office buildings, retail centres, hotels, schools and industrial facilities.


The modern aluminium window is therefore the result of much more than a change in architectural fashion. It represents decades of development in metallurgy, manufacturing, engineering, building regulation and construction practice.

The spelling may distinguish South Africa from regions such as the United States and Canada, where “aluminum” is dominant, but the more interesting regional distinction is how aluminium has developed within South Africa's own industrial and architectural environment.


From the establishment of local processing in Pietermaritzburg in 1949, through the expansion of the aluminium industry in Richards Bay, the organisation of architectural aluminium manufacturers during the 1970s, and the development of national construction standards, aluminium became progressively integrated into South African building practice.


Today, that history is visible in the buildings around us.
